Am = Tropical monsoon climate driest month (which nearly always occurs at or soon after the "winter" solstice for that side of the equator) with precipitation less than 60 mm (2.4 in), but at least 100 − ( T o t a l A n n u a l P r e c i p i t a t i o n ( m m ) 25 ).Af = Tropical rainforest climate average precipitation of at least 60 mm (2.4 in) in every month. This type of climate has an average temperature of 18 ☌ (64.4 ☏) or higher every month of the year, with significant precipitation. Summers are defined as the 6-month period that is warmer either from April–September and/or October–March while winter is the 6-month period that is cooler. The second letter indicates the seasonal precipitation type, while the third letter indicates the level of heat. The Köppen climate classification scheme divides climates into five main climate groups: A (tropical), B (arid), C (temperate), D (continental), and E (polar). Overview Köppen climate classification scheme symbols description table 1st The Trewartha system sought to create a more refined middle latitude climate zone, which was one of the criticisms of the Köppen system (the climate group C was too general). The Köppen climate classification system was modified further within the Trewartha climate classification system in 1966 (revised in 1980). Due to its association with the plant life of a given region, the system is useful in predicting future changes of plant life within that region. In addition to identifying climates, the system can be used to analyze ecosystem conditions and identify the main types of vegetation within climates. Īs Köppen designed the system based on his experience as a botanist, his main climate groups are based on the types of vegetation occurring in a given climate classification region. Climates are classified based on specific criteria unique to each climate type. For example, Cfb indicates an oceanic climate with warm summers as indicated by the ending b. The system assigns a temperature subgroup for all groups other than those in the A group, indicated by the third letter for climates in B, C, D, and the second letter for climates in E. For example, Af indicates a tropical rainforest climate. All climates except for those in the E group are assigned a seasonal precipitation subgroup (the second letter). All climates are assigned a main group (the first letter). Each group and subgroup is represented by a letter. The five main groups are A (tropical), B (arid), C (temperate), D (continental), and E (polar). The Köppen climate classification divides climates into five main climate groups, with each group being divided based on patterns of seasonal precipitation and temperature. Later, German climatologist Rudolf Geiger (1894–1981) introduced some changes to the classification system in 19, which is thus sometimes called the Köppen–Geiger climate classification. It was first published by German-Russian climatologist Wladimir Köppen (1846–1940) in 1884, with several later modifications by Köppen, notably in 19. The Köppen climate classification is one of the most widely used climate classification systems.

A perfect combination of music, lights, food, and loved ones makes for a tradition that is worth bringing back year after year. There’s nothing quite like a good old-fashioned holiday party. This is understandable, as college is quite different from high school. The professors are less personally involved, classes are bigger, exams are worth more, reading is more intense, and classes are much more rigorous. That doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with you it just means you need to learn some more effective study skills. Fortunately, there are many active, effective study strategies that are shown to be effective in college classes. This handout offers several tips on effective studying. Implementing these tips into your regular study routine will help you to efficiently and effectively learn course material. Simply reading and re-reading texts or notes is not actively engaging in the material.Įxperiment with them and find some that work for you. Only ‘doing’ the readings for class is not studying. It is simply doing the reading for class. Think of reading as an important part of pre-studying, but learning information requires actively engaging in the material (Edwards, 2014). Active engagement is the process of constructing meaning from text that involves making connections to lectures, forming examples, and regulating your own learning (Davis, 2007). Active studying does not mean highlighting or underlining text, re-reading, or rote memorization. Though these activities may help to keep you engaged in the task, they are not considered active studying techniques and are weakly related to improved learning (Mackenzie, 1994). Formulate questions and problems and write complete answers. Study in terms of question, evidence, and conclusion: What is the question posed by the instructor/author? What is the evidence that they present? What is the conclusion?.For technical classes, work the problems and explain the steps and why they work. For non-technical classes (e.g., English, History, Psychology), figure out the big ideas so you can explain, contrast, and re-evaluate them.Develop symbols that represent concepts.Create concept maps or diagrams that explain the material.Derive examples that relate to your own experiences.Say the information aloud in your own words as if you are the instructor and teaching the concepts to a class. Organization and planning will help you to actively study for your courses. When studying for a test, organize your materials first and then begin your active reviewing by topic (Newport, 2007). Often professors provide subtopics on the syllabi. Use them as a guide to help organize your materials. For example, gather all of the materials for one topic (e.g., PowerPoint notes, text book notes, articles, homework, etc.) and put them together in a pile. Label each pile with the topic and study by topics.įor more information on the principle behind active studying, check out our tipsheet on metacognition. The Study Cycle, developed by Frank Christ, breaks down the different parts of studying: previewing, attending class, reviewing, studying, and checking your understanding. Although each step may seem obvious at a glance, all too often students try to take shortcuts and miss opportunities for good learning. For example, you may skip a reading before class because the professor covers the same material in class doing so misses a key opportunity to learn in different modes (reading and listening) and to benefit from the repetition and distributed practice (see #3 below) that you’ll get from both reading ahead and attending class. Understanding the importance of all stages of this cycle will help make sure you don’t miss opportunities to learn effectively. One of the most impactful learning strategies is “distributed practice”-spacing out your studying over several short periods of time over several days and weeks (Newport, 2007). The most effective practice is to work a short time on each class every day. The total amount of time spent studying will be the same (or less) than one or two marathon library sessions, but you will learn the information more deeply and retain much more for the long term-which will help get you an A on the final. The important thing is how you use your study time, not how long you study. Long study sessions lead to a lack of concentration and thus a lack of learning and retention. Jumping in and offering that help can be a great reward for your life and your wallet. But others need honest help to do their best. Some of the users are just in it hoping someone will write their essays or finish their homework for them. 2īe careful as you look through postings. TutorMe says you can earn at least $16 an hour. Some of these apps are also available for PC (Windows). Rosetta 2: Not optimized yet for Apple Silicon, but still runs via Rosetta 2. For those of you who don’t know, Apple takes a cut of the sale (30%) from developers when you use the App Store. This makes it super convenient to reinstall apps later down the road and saves a lot of time. While I always try to support developers where I can, I do prefer purchasing from the Mac App Store. The Mac apps below (listed in alphabetical order) consist of free and premium apps straight from the developer’s website and apps from the Mac App Store. So for most of my life, I’ve been knee-deep (more than most) in the Microsoft world of Active Directory, SharePoint, Exchange, etc. In 2013 I received the Microsoft MVP Award in the Windows Expert-IT Pro category. I switched to Macs back in 2018 after using PCs exclusively for over 20 years. Hopefully, you’ll find an awesome new Mac app or setting in this list that will help make your life easier! I’ve also included some of the tweaks and settings I change whenever I get a new Mac or reinstall macOS. So to keep from repeating myself over and over, I’ve compiled a list of what I think are the best Mac apps. Another reason for this post is that visitors, friends, and even family are always asking me which apps I use for specific tasks. |
